Dan Grammer, grammera@marietta.edu, May 12, 2000 - HUGHES, NEWELL

Does anyone know any relationship between Mason Co, WV and Defiance Co, OH? My ancestor, Andrew HUGHES, who was born in Defiance Co in abt 1854 married Flora NEWELL of Mason Co in 1874. The marriage took place in Defiance Co. She died before 1880. Her parents are shown in the Mason Co 1870 and 1880 census. In the 1870 census she is shown with them. In the 1880 census Andrew HUGHES is shown living with them as a widower. In doing research in Defiance Co. I found several locations that look like they may have been named for places in Mason Co, WV. I have been at a brick wall on Andrew HUGHES for years. Maybe Flora's parents moved to Defiance Co, shortly after 1870, did not like it and moved back by 1880. It has always seemed unusual to me that these two families got together. I would love to know how this happened. Maybe it would help me unravel, who Andrew's parents are. There are several Andrew HUGHES in the Defiance County area and I have not been able to determine which one is mine.

Evelyn Chamberlain, echamber@brinet.com, May 25, 2000 - BRATTON, SLATER

There is a Marriage Certificate Fraktur hanging on the wall of Binion's Roadhouse Restaurant, 1565 Four Seasons Blvd., Hendersonville, NC 28792.
Information: Marriage Certificate for: Leonard SLATER and Eleanora F (S?) BRATTON of DEFIANCE COUNTY, of STATE OF OHIO were by me united in Holy Matrimony of the State of Ohio at my Office on the 25th. day of October, One Thousand Eight Hundred and Sixty-Five Witnesses: Cordelia HART and Christopher HOOTMAN
H. C. HOOTMAN, Justice of the Peace
I saw this when my husband & I were dining there. I copied the information. I was told the owner probably bought it at a flea market or estate sale to hang on the wall of the restaurant. Perhaps this is an important piece of information to fill in the gap on someone's family tree. Being a member of DAR and a family genealogist I know how much this can mean to someone researching these families. I will help if I can.

Kim Featherstun, KFeath718@aol.com, Aug. 16, 2000 - SHOOK

I am researching my grandmother's father, Harry SHOOK (Born in 1886). According to his obituary he was born in Defiance but my grandmother believes it was actually Hicksville. At a young age he was put into an orphanage with his brothers and sisters because his mom passed away and his dad could not handle it. Supposedly he was raised by a family and took on their name but he was not formally adopted. Any ideas on where to go with this information?

Gai LaMarche, gaigai@swbell.net, Aug. 23, 2000 - BALL

I am sending you this in hopes you can help me or guide me to someone who can. I have a copy of the Defiance Crescent News dated 1967 with an article and photo about a small cemetery where George Ball was buried in 1866. The photo shows the grave stone and says it is in the Foster Family Cemetery. According to the book "Ohio Cemeteries" this cemetery is located in "Defiance Township NE 1/4, S36, T4, R4. Was on south side of Carter Rd. 1/4 mi west of SR66; 2 1/2 mi south of Defiance. Abandoned." I was just visiting in Defiance, and drove along Carter Rd., but there are a lot of woods, and I had my 95 year-old grandfather, Virgil Ball, in the car with me, so I couldn't stop and go stomping around the woods like I would have liked, looking for the stone. Gramps lives in Tiffin, and at his age is not able to do any searching. Now I am back in Houston, TX and it will be quite a while before I can get up that way again. Do you know of anyone who might be willing to locate this cemeter and the stone for me? I have other Ball relatives in Defiance, but they really aren't interested in genealogy. George was an ancestor of mine, obviously. He and his family emigrated from Alsace in 1830, I have the ship's passenger list. Thank you for any assistance you can give me.

Joey, Joeysearch@aol.com, Sept. 12, 2000 - MEYER, PANNING
My great grandmother, Anna Meyer Panning, came from Germany to America in 1872 with her mother, sister Mary Meyer, brothers Heinrich Frederick, Henry, and Herman Meyer. In the 1880 Census I can find Anna married to Henry Panning in Henry County and her brother Fred is with them. Also, in Defiance County I found her sister Mary Meyer married to Fred Meyer and her brother Herman is with them. Henry Meyer is listed as a laborer in Defiance County. But I can't find their mother. I have three possible names for her from the ship passanger lists and from biographies. They are Sophia, Magdalena, and Helen. I found her son Heinrich Frederick in the St. Mark's Cemetery in Adams Township of Defiance County. Next to him is a Meta Meyer, formerly wife of Herman, who died in Oct, 1899. The age and the death date fit, but not the name. Does anyone know anything about Meta Meyer in St. Mark's Cemetery? In the Okolona Bethlehem Cemetery, I found her son Herman and his wife Caroline. There is a Sophia M. Meyer there, but the death date of 1908 seems a little late from the other info I have gathered. Does anyone know anything about Sopia M. Meyer in Okolona Bethlehem Cemetery in Adams Township? Then I found a marriage record of Magdalina Meyer to John G. Stockman. Does anyone have info on John and Magdalina Stockman? I would appreciate anything that could help me piece the Meyer family together. Even info on other Meyer families in the area could help me.

Art Lumb, ArtLumb@Prodigy.Net, Sept. 30, 2000 - PERIARD
My greatgrandparents, Alfred Periard and Elizabeth Barbeau Periard were married in Defiance in the early 1870's. My grandmother Sarah Chlotilde Periard, and presumably her siblings, including Louis Periard and Ovola (sp?), were born in Defiance. I am not sure of the birthplaces of Alfred and Elizabeth, but the French language was spoken in the home. About 1900, the family moved to Saginaw, MI, but their relatives remained in Defiance and Hicksville, as the families visited back and forth. There may still be descendants of these relatives in the Defiance/Hicksville area today. Any information taht can be provided about these ancestors and their families would be much appreciated.

Lois Durr, ldurr@hawaii.rr.com, Oct, 26, 2000 - NEEDHAM, GRANDY, PIERCE, ARRANDT, HOOTMAN, etc.
I am looking for info on my g. grandmother Harriet (Hattie) Needham. I believe she lived in Defiance Cty in about 1860. She was b. in New York. Her parents were Truman and Miranda Needham. Her brother Edwin Needham m. a Esther Grandy of Defiance Ohio. They all moved to Hartford, Van Buren Cty, MI where they appear on the 1870 census. Truman and Miranda Needham were b. in VT. Hattie m. Chas. G. Pierce of Greene Cty Ohio. His people were from Vt and possible NH and NY. Hope we can connect.

Nov. 1, 2000 - Thanks to a response by the helpful people at the Defiance Cty Library I made a phone call and learned this is the correct spelling of my g.aunt's husband. My mothers mother was Jennie Pierce, she had a sister Elizabeth (Lizzie) b. in Ohio in abt. 1874 [source population schedule-US census 1880-Hartford, Van Buren Cty, MI]. Lizzie was married to a Frank Traver until at least 1916. Later she married (Ray?) Arrandt of Hicksville Ohio. I remember visiting them. So Ray and Lizzie probably died in the 1950's or after. I learned today that the Arrandts may also be related to the Pierces through their mother.
I am looking for Esther Grandy and her family. Her parents were N. Grandy and Anna Grandy. She was born in Ohio. She died in 1894 in Hartford, Van Buren Cty, MI --Her husband Edwin Needham died in 1929 in Hartford, Van Buren Cty, MI. His obituary sd. his wife came from Defiance Ohio. He was b. in 1848. His parents were Maranda and Truman Needham.
I am looking for my g.grandfather Chas. G. Pierce b. in Ohio and m. to Harriet Needham dau. of Trauman and Maranda Needham. Harriet's brother Edwin m. Esther Needham of Defiance Cty. All moved to Hartford, Van Buren Cty, MI in the 1870's. My g. aunt Elizabeth Pierce was b. in Ohio and later married a Ray (?) Arrandt of Hicksville. I believe "Lizzie" died in Hicksville OH in abt the 1950's. She was born in 1874. His parents came from N.H. and VT and possibly New York. Family history says we were at that time (1900) 4th or 6th cousins of Franklin Pierce. I learned today there are connections to the Arrandts through the Hootmans to the Pierces.
Update - Jan. 27, 2001
Hello-I have learned so much more! Chas G. Pierce (m.Harriet Needham-1868) is most likely the brother of Mary A. Pierce (m. John A. Hootman-1863). They are the children of William G. (b. VT)and Ada Pierce (b. NY). Both were born in Milford Twnship and married in Defiance County, Ohio. My g. aunt Lizzie m. Ray Arrants in 1948 and lived and died in Hicksville in 1955. Hope to hear from you.

Mike Marsh, sturnbulll@home.com, Nov. 2, 2000 - GOFF, SCHOOLEY, etc.

I'm in possession of a book of limericks/poems writing by cousins/sisters/friends of Amanda Belle Goff (Schooley) - my gg grandmother. Most of these the entries were between 1884-1890, and most of the persons were from Defiance county. The surnames of the persons who wrote these 'diddies' to my gg grandmother are - Schooley, Warner, Wentworth, Coward, Dunlap, Lybarger, Dixson, Wish, Ogilivie, McCartney, Leynde, Goff, Harris, Keener, McCormick, Elliot, Williams, Strong, Aston, Clark, and Erter. I have done my best to read the handwriting and some of the above names are guesses, so it is possible that I have not read the writing correctly. There are over 50 entries from locals of Defiance and surrounding counties to Amanda. If you have any of these names in your research, and you are interested in having me look up poems authored by individuals which are connected to these names. I'm happy to do so. Just let me know.
