Walter M. Bolinger, wbolinger73@hotmail.com, Jan. 1, 2001 - BOLINGER, BROWN, SNIDER
My g grandfather,Nicholas Bolinger, lived in Defiance during the last years of his life. I have a copy of his probate dated August 1855. There seems to be no record of his death or burial. Though in going through cemetery records I find that some stones are unreadable. My grandfather, Peter was the executor. Nicholas's first wife, Margaret Snider, died in 1848 and is buried in Crawford County. In a little note book that my father wrote a brief history of the Bolinger family. He mentions Nicholas first marriage and then makes a short statement"Nicholas later married xxxx" On Peter's death certificate it states that his mother was "Lydia Brown" This probably was the name of Nicholas's second wife. Is there any record of this marriage that would have been 1851-54? Thank you.

Jim, JIMMINNERY@aol.com, Jan. 1, 2001 - MILLER
I am researching the Benjamin F. MILLER family of Evansport. Appears on 1850 and 1860 census'. Benjamin born approx 1825. Appears that father may have died while family was in Evansport. They apparently moved to Wauseon for 1870 census. Possible brother, William, on 1860 census, same page. William born approx 1809. Don't see any Millers in 1840 census. Does anyone have a record of cemetery inscriptions in that area? I see two females in Evansport in 1860 census, possible widows Anna and Florence. Florence is also the name of Benjamin's daughter who was born in 1859. She was my gg grandmother. Any and all information that would help me trace back will be appreciated. According to census, Benjamin was born in VA; William born in PA.

Judie (Koehl) Shaw, shirt@bright.net, Jan. 16, 2001 - KUMMERANT, KOEHL, etc.
A member of your society, Jeananne Steingass, is researching the Kummerants from Defiance. Frank Adam Kummerant was my g-grandmother's brother. Her name was Anna Maria (Kummerant) Koehl. She married Michael Koehl III. Anna was a spiritual name given at birth so she went by Mary. She also had a sister, Gertrude, that married my g-grandfather's brother, Jacob Koehl. Frank Adam, Mary and Gertrude was born in a small village named Ober Roden, Hessen, Germany. It is now called Rödermark. Their parents were Johann and Maria Anna (Weber) Kummerant.
I was in contact with an Ann Anderson who was a daughter of Frank Adam but I believe she passed away a few years ago in Defiance. Her daughter was going to help her search amoung her papers to see what she could find out about her father's family but we never connected after that. Now it's too late. I don't know what her daughter's name is.

I am interested in finding out about two Corwin gentlemen from Defiance. The first is M.A. Corwin. He is in the 1876 Defiance Atlas as owning land, most likely a farmer. This is Tiffin township. The second Corwin gentleman is Isaac Corwin. He is listed under biographies section of the 1876 Atlas as a Blacksmith who was from Pennsylvania and came to Defiance in 1850. My 5th great grandfather was Samuel Corwin, his daugther was Susan (my 4th great grandmother) and she was married to John S. Ames. Both John S. Ames and Susan died in Huron county, Ohio. I am curious as to whether M.A. and Isaac Corwin might be any relation to Susan Corwin-Ames. I would appreciate any information that you might be able to offer me.

Pat, Chinsusma@aol.com, Feb. 13, 2001 - SHEETS, EASTERDAY
I am hunting information on, and grave sites of David Wander Sheets and wife, Susanna Easterday. They were born in Darmstadt, Germany, from oral history. Family has him as oldest son of Michael Sheets and wife, Anna Maria "Mary" Unknown, who had 1 or 2 sons in Germany before coming to US. Michael died in 1875. He and spouse are buried in St. Michael's Catholic Church cemetery east of Defiance, along with some of the children. Susanna Easterday Sheets also died in 1875 in Highland Co., after birth of her 12th. child. David Sheets was a private in Civil War, in CO E. of 125th. Reg. of OVI. His date of death is unknown, but he did not die in the war. They are supposed to be buried in Fish Cemetery, Ayersville, Highland Twp. I found what MAY be the cemetery, but stones were mostly illegible, and none were marked for a veteran. Can anyone verify the relationship between Michael and David, and/or give me directions to Fish Cemetery, and tell me who would have a plot map of the site, so that I can find David Sheets. He was my great grandfather. This family has been my "brick wall" for three years and I would truly value any scrap of information on them.

Next was John Nelson Karr who also moved to Illinois and is buried in Cherry Grove cemetery ? we think he was single ? Next was Melisa Jane Karr/Carr ? she married a Frank Clapsaddle born about 1829. John was born about 1827. Libby Carr/ Karr born about 1831 and Married a -_______ Whistler?. Julia Ann Carr/Karr born about 1833 and married a John Cook & later a ______ Gordon? last was James Carr/Karr born about 1835 married a Martha P. Warren the 8 Aug 1850. They moved to Ottumwa, Iowa and died there.  They probably were farmers in that area. Their dad was a Wm H. Carr but have nothing on the mother other than she was a french lady? Frank Boyd, frankboyd1962@yahoo.com, March 9, 2001 - BOYD, MONINGER, TRACY

I am Looking for Sandra Sue Moninger (Maiden Name)... She was 22 years old on 11-23-62, the date of my birth... I was adopted shortly thereafter by Paul Joseph Boyd, and Joanne Nancy Tracy (Boyd) They have both passed and I want to find my birth mother and father.

Maureen, merryone@traverse.net, March 9, 2001 - Langdon, Knisely, Nicely, Snyder, Balmer, Montague, Weller, McCully
Looking for information on Maria (Mariah) Lucia LANGDON b. Ohio about 1846. Her parents were John LANGDON, (may also be known as Sheldon LANGDON, but this is unproved) b. NY and Nancy b. Ohio. Maria's siblings are Sarah, John S., Willis T., and Charles. They resided in Defiance county, Ohio.
Maria married Henry KNISELY (spelling later changed to NICELY) and had at least seven children with him, possibly eight. I have quite a bit on these children. Maria divorced Henry in about 1894. She next shows up as Maria SNYDER in the legal papers for the settlement of her father's estate in 1904. The 1910 Miracode index shows a "Enavia" living with her husband Adam SNYDER in Defiance, Ohio. Also in the home are a grandson, John NICELY age 12, and a granddaughter Myrtle WELLER. I know Maria had a grandson named John about the age of the John listed. The WELLER name is not familiar to me and I am assuming she is a granddaughter of Adam's.
Sarah LANGDON is not listed on her father's (John) court papers, and I assume she died before 1904. Three grandsons are listed which I assume are Sarah's children. They are Frank MONTAGUE of Chicago Junction, Ohio, Austin BALMER of Paulding, Ohio and John BALMER of Paulding, Ohio.
John S. LANGDON (son of John and Nancy) is living in Alma, Michigan in 1904.
Willis T. and Charles LANGDON (sons of John and Nancy) are living in Defiance, Ohio.
I am trying to find the parents of John LANGDON and his wife Nancy. John was born in New York ( according to the 1850 census) and it has been speculated that he is the "Sheldon" Langdon listed in the Langdon family bible as the son of Cornelius LANGDON and Eunice WYMAN. Does anyone have any information to help solve this?
Nancy, wife of John and mother of Maria, was born in Ohio. The 1850 census shows that her father was born in PA and her mother in Ireland. If Nancy sounds familiar to anyone, I would love to hear from you.
The 1860 census shows a James MCCULLY, (or could be James M. CULLY) age 14, living with John and Nancy LANGDON. He is shown as attending school in the past year. Is he a clue to Nancy's maiden name or is he just boarding there and helping on the farm? If anyone can shed some light on this it would be very much appreciated.
If anyone has any connections to this family or knows what happened to them, I would love to hear from you. I have lots on Maria and Henry's children and the NICELY family, but only what I have posted on the LANGDONS.

Charlene Bauer, cbauer@accnorwalk.com, March 10, 2001 - CATON, KAVVNAUGH

Karen Rinnert Parsons, karenparsons88@home.com, April 29, 2001 - BRACE, SPRAGUE, KING, STUBBS, STRONG, PRETTYMAN, BRILL

I'm looking for the Luther BRACE and Elizabeth (Betsey) SPRAGUE BRACE marriage.... Have found that there was a Lewis King in (near Ballston Spa and South Greenfield)) North Milton, Saratoga County, NY. He born about 1795 (so of the same generation as Betsey). He died Jan 26, 1858 age 63 years, and buried in same place as wife Cynthia. He married Cynthia --b. 1796, died 1868, and buried same place as Lewis King. They had two children who died young: Sally King, b. 1827, and d. 1838, Calvin King, b 1830 d 1831, age 1 year, 2 mos.
They also evidently had another daughter....Frances. Frances m. in Feb 1860 John J. Brill b WIlton, NY 15 May 1827 ...The reference says Frances, daughter of Lewis King, who was one of the earliest settlers of the town of Greenfield, in Saratoga County, NY"....married John J. Brill in 1860...It doesn't mention any other Lewis King at these times, in this county....at least that I have been able to find. Wilton, by the way isn't too far from Milton, in Saratoga Co, NY.....I don't have any of my files right in front of me, but this area is the same place where the Strong and Sprague families were. I believe somehow the Brace's were involved here for a short time.
Census:
1790- Strong, Sprague and King families were in Saratoga Co, near Ballston Spa and Saratoga at this time.
- need to check these next 3 time frames for who was where and when...1800  1810   1820
1830 - Luther Brace was here, with Solomon Sprague in Deleware Co, Porter Twp, Ohio. So was Lindenberger family. Solomon's sister, Phoebe Sprague Barber was here, as was Solomon's brother Festus Sprague, before he left to go to Utah with the Mormons.
Children living with Luther and Betsey Sprague King Brace
---Mary Ann Brace b. ca 1824....Married John Stubbs.
---Ezeke Issac (or known as E C, or Issac ) born 10 October 1828, North of Albany
--Ebenezer - born ca 1831 (this is what I believe to be my line...)
--James b ca 1832 OH and died 1867
1834 Solomon goes with grandson Lewis King Jr to Williams Co, Ohio.
5 Dec 1835 Luther and Betsey married before Solomon's death , as they were named in Solomon's will as married.
NOTE: Lewis King, Jr. married Jane Prettyman in Williams Co., OH (buried in Boynton Cemetery, Springfield Twp.   Solomon and Deliverance SPRAGUE and other SPRAGUE relatives buried in Old Evansport Cemetery, Tiffin Twp, Defiance Co., OH)

Quinta Scott,  quinta-s@swbell.net, June 18, 2001 - RICE, SALES, SEELY
I am looking for information on Ephraim Seely who purchased land from the government in Delaware Township in Defiance County on August 9, 1824. His neighbor was Hiram Sales. Both Hiram and Ephraim came from Ontario County, New York where they appear in the Ontario County 1820 census. I think Ephraim was born in Rutland County, Vermont in the 1790's. What I am trying to learn is if his sister was the Nancy/Electa Sales, Hiram's wife who was born in Rutland County, in 1799 or 1974.
Moses Rice purchased land from the government in Delaware Township in Defiance County on August 2, 1824. His neighbor was Hiram Sales who purchased land on the same day. I find a Moses Rice in Oxford County, Ontario, at the same time Hiram lived there before 1815 when Hiram moved on to Ontario County, New York. I am trying to learn if Hiram's wife, Nancy/Electa Sales who was born in Rutland County, Vermont in 1794 or 1799, is Moses's sister or daughter. I find an Electa Rice, born in Rutland County in 1799.
I am looking for the maiden name of Nancy/Electa Sales. She was born in Rutland County, Vermont in 1794 or 1799 (her tombstone says 1794, but is difficult to read). Her tombstone also lists her name as Electa, but she signed deeds in Jones County, Iowa as Nancy, and researchers know her as Nancy A. Sales. She also appears in census records as Nancy A. Sales. Her husband, Hiram Sales, purchased land in Delaware Township, Defiance County on Augst 9, 1824, the same day that Moses Rice and Ephraim Seely purchased in the same township. Both Hiram and Ephraim appear in the 1820 Ontario County, New York census. Both Hiram and Moses lived in Oxford County, Ontario before 1815. Is Nancy/Electa related to either Moses Rice or Ephraim Seely?

I am trying to locate any record of my Gt Grandmother, ELLEN TUTTLE DEITRICH, wife of LEVI DEITRICH. The last record I can find of her is in the 1880 census of Defiance County, Richland Twp, in the city of Independence. I have found my Gt Grandfather LEVI DEITRICH through his civil war pension records and he died in Clayton, Mi, Lenawee County, Dover Twp, and is buried in the So. Dover Cemetary there. His death cert says "widowed" witnessed by a son VERNAL DEITRICH, and his date of death is Dec 21, 1915..I checked with the Courthouse in Adrian, Mi and was told they have no record of a death for ELLEN TUTTLE DEITRICH. I'm hoping that someone can find a record of her in the census at Ohio for 1900 or 1910 since I understand the 1890 census was destroyed.

Charlene Bauer, cbauer@accnorwalk.com, Aug. 15, 2001 - CATON, DEVEAUX, HALE, DANGLER, CAVANAUGH (KAVANAGH), NOON, WELCH, HART
Searching for members of the above named families. Julia Caton, was the daughter of Bryan and Mary Kavanagh, who arrived in the US from Ireland in 1858. The KAVANAGH daughters were all born in Ireland, probably in County Kilkenny, near New Ross in County Wexford. Also searching for the maiden name of Mary KAVANAGH, possibly HART. Originally settled in Franklin County, Ohio and moving to Putnam County. Julia had sister, Mary, who married Patrick NOON, Catherine, who married James WELCH. Julia and Richard CATON, moved to Defiance in early 1900's. NOON'S and WELCH's remained in Putnam County from what we know. The Welch's died early and their children resided with the Kavanagh grandparents. Mr. Kavanagh purchased farms for each of his daughter's and sons-in-law in Putnam County, Liberty Twp.

Lori N. Davies, lorindavies@home.com, Aug. 12, 2001 - MOSHER, MEEK, WALDEN, NEIDHARDT, YACKEE
I am looking for a possible connection to my husband's Moshers that were in Wood County in 1910 and then in Defiance County in 1920. Lucy Mosher was living with sons John (13 yo) and Venson C (10 yo) in 1910, however by 1920 both sons were living in Defiance County and both married. John married Edith WALDEN, and Vincent (Venson) married Hazel MEEK. Hazel and her family lived in Williams County in 1910, so the boys may have come to Defiance by way of Williams Co., but they did live close to the Neidhardt family and Edward Yackee, so I am hoping that Nellie was related to those Moshers. I know very little else at this point. Lucy's husband may have been Wesley Mosher.

Walter D. SCOTT, P38g@aol.com, Aug. 22, 2001 - SCOTT, DILLWORTH
My SCOTT and DILLWORTH line has a connection to HICKSVILLE from the time frame of 1850 until 1912 when Grandmother Charlotte (Lottie) moved the family, by B&O Railroad to Oregon in the Lane County area. Decedents still live in that area. Grandfather Jesse Ellsworth SCOTT died 18th Dec 1907, Dec in Hicksville. He is buried in Hicksville as are the DILLWORTH's. They were owners of drygoods stores there and Jesse was an original member of the first Saving & Loan establishment in Hicksville. My Father, Leo Emerson SCOTT, was born July 18th 1892 north of Hicksville, but no birth certificate was recorded, he was a member if The Hart Band from Hicksville which was nationally known and joined The Army Band at Jefferson Barracks at 17 after his father Jesse died. If others are doing any research on this line I would be glad to network with them.

Diane Bennett, dbennett619@hotmail.com, Sept. 10, 2001 -    ETCHEN, WAGNER
I am searching the family of John Wagner who was born circa 1836 in Germany. He first appears in the 1860 Delaware Twp. Census, occupation farmer with wife Margaret, same age, maiden name, Etchen, also born in Germany with daughter, Mary age 3 born in Ohio. They owned property at the Delaware Bend. Other children later included John Peter Wagner born 1860, Mary Jane born 1862, wm. 1866, Henry N. 1869, and Maggie E. 1876.
Margaret was a widow in the 1900 Delaware Twp. Census, so John must have died between 1880 and 1900. The Defiance Co. Record Ctr. cannot locate a death record for John.
Margaret was buried at Riverside Cemetery on Jan 20, 1917.  Perhaps I can find John buried with Margaret there.

Jane, jane226@hotmail.com , Oct. 26, 2001 - CRESSMAN/BRESSMAN/PRESSMAN, DUMONT, SCHUMAKER
As is often the case, I have the above name variations, and am seeking to clarify. I have a death certificate for Susan DUMONT SCHUMAKER, 29 July 1927 was issued in Defiance County. Her obituary states that she was visiting her niece, Mrs. Joseph PRESSMAN, in Defiance, when she died. Other family obits(this one dated 1 July 1935) list niece Mrs. Joseph CRESSMAN, of Defiance , and again, niece, Mrs. Joseph BRESSMAN, of efiance( also dated July 1, 1935 from another paper. I have ideas of a given name for this woman of possibly Caroline, Louise or Justine, but can't be certain as I cannot find out which of the above surnames is correct to check census, marriage, etc. The DUMONT line was in Fostoria, or rather Kansas area of Ohio at the time of Susan DUMONT SCHUMAKER's death. I would so appreciate it if someone could help me determine the proper surname, from directories, or possibly 1920 census or? as I do not know which surname to work with, so have no idea of obituaries, church (probably Catholic) to search. Other than possibly an obit for Joseph *RESSMAN. Thank you so much for any direction you might give.

I am trying to locate the parents names of my gggrandfather Lewis Wallace Wilson. He is the father of my ggrandmother Marjorie Leone Wilson who was born in Hicksville on April 5, 1904.Her mothers name was Rosella Steward. So I am assuming that he was from that area also. He was born in 1863 and died in 1950. What I do know of him is that he had at least two brothers and his father might have died in the civil war, because his mother was a widow and raised the boys on her own. If anyone could help me with this, I would really appreciate it. Thank you.
