David A. Scott, DAVID50TALAST@aol.com, Jan, 13, 2002 - JOHNSON, SCOTT

Mary Ellen (Johnson) Scott is mother of my grandfather. I wanted to post this on a Defiance site because my grandfather, John Wesley  Scott was born there in Highland Township around 1884 or '85. I want (sound familiar)?...To know the names of her parents. I want to see a  picture of her. I want to know her date and place of her marriage to David    Scott of Gallia Co., OH. Mary is documented as born in KY (where)?...Oct. 14, 1850, just missing  the US Census. She married David Scott and had eighteen children who  included two sets of twins. Most births I found to be in Gallia County. 1880  census has David, Mary and family in Seneca County, co-founding the First  Baptist Church of Fostoria. Mary preceded David in death, Oct. 21, 1902, due  to peritonitis. She is buried with David at Fountain Cemetery, Fostoria, Ohio. There is one tragic story that family speak of in when Mary, David, the    older children and "other Scott's" where working in the fields. An older   daughter stayed home to sit Mary's youngest twins. The home caught fire and   the babies eventually died as a result of their burns. I don't know where this occurred, when or  with whom. Any help out there?

Arthur Hunsberger, Art@Hunsberger.net, Jan. 23, 2001 - SANDOZ, ENGLISH, PICKERING, BLOCK
My GGGrandfather was Amos Sandoz. He lived at what is now 21656 Bowman Road, Defiance Twp. He and Amanda came to Defiance County from Switzerland about 1846-1848. Amos was a farmer and also builder of houses. He built the house on Bowman Road and also the house at 840 Karnes Avenue. I am interested in finding other houses that he built in the area in the 1880s. I am sure there are others. Amos [1822-1891] and Amanda [1822-1890] are buried in Riverside Cemetary. Their children were all girls......eight ! So there are no Sandoz offspring with the Sandoz name. There are several families remaining the the area that are related, namely English, Pickering, and Block. I have had contact with several. I would be glad to send you a print of the family as I now have recorded. Please let me know. My query......I would like to find other houses built by Amos Sandoz.

Janet Moll-Chrisman, gac4452@peoplestelecom.net, 01/24/02  - HARMINGER, HAWK, MILLER, MOLL
Looking for additional information on the following families: Moll, Harmening, Miller, Hawk. My grandparents Carl Henry and Lottie Christbelle (Hawk) Moll were both born in Defiance on 6 October 1898. Carl's parents were William E Moll of Napoleon, Ohio and Lydia Harmening of Defiance. Lottie Hawks' parents were Hiram Hawk and Caroline Miller.

Lydia Harmening graduated from Defiance College, June, 1888. She married William E. Moll in December 1888. Her Father J.F. Harmening (known as Frederick) was born in Germany. He came to America in 1855, at the age of seventeen. In 1866 he married Johanna Barbara Hecht- Three children were born of which Lydia and William survived. His wife passed away in September, 1871. He then married her sister, Amelia Hecht, in 1873. They lived at 804 Holgate Avenue where their two sons, Carl and Fred, were born.
The Defiance Democrat notice of his death said, "He was a prominent citizen, successful in business and amassed quite a fortune. He owned large tracts of land in Defiance County and laid out the village of Mark Center in 1875, after the Baltimore and Ohio Railroad had been built." He also had a large tract of land about 1200 acres near the Hay's farm - Whit's Mills and six miles west of Defiance at Ashwood. Before our grandfather's death October 29th, 1883, he had purchased three store rooms at 315 Clinton Street in Defiance. This was one of the sources of income for our grandmother for the rest of her life. After her death, our mother sold the store rooms to the Meek Pastry Shop. An item in the Crescent News at the time of the sale, said these store rooms had been in the same family the longest of any property on Clinton Street: by Elizabeth Moll.

If anyone else is working on these lines or has additional information please contact me.

John Jordan Moore, Dunamase1653@aol.com, May 19, 2002 - SCHONDEL, MOORE, etc.
I am resuming the pursuit of the Defiance roots and fruits after taking twenty-six years off to essay paternity. My grandfather, Dr. John A. Moore, was born in Defiance in 1871; his parents were married at St. John's 8/21/1867; his mother, Maria Magdalena GROSSELL (1846-1929) was born in Defiance; her parents, Joseph (1816-1900) and Maria Sophia SCHONDEL (1821-1903)Grossell lived all of their married life and died in Defiance; my thrice-great-grandmother, Gertrude BECHEL (1798-1885)SCHONDEL, died in Defiance. Liz and Cal PARTEE were my great-grandmother's younger sisters. I have visited Defiance three times ..... one of my favorite photos of my then-four-year-old son shows him sitting on the pyramid of cannonballs alongside the Defiance Carnegie Library (on the founding board of which, my twice-great-uncle, Francis X. Grossell served), near the fabled - in our family, anyway - juncture of the Maumee and the Auglaize.
My  twice-great-grandmother, Gertrude Bechel Schondel (1798-1885), died in Defiance, Ohio, and was probably originally buried in the Roman Catholic cemetery which was displaced for road construction (or so I was told by the pastor at St. John's, Defiance, back in the late 1970s) and had her remains transferred to Riverside Cemetery. I would be interested to find out where, precisely, in Riverside my twice-great-grandmother is buried and whether the grave is marked. Up until very recently, I hadn't known that anyone in her generation of the Schondel family had emigrated from Alsace.
Just about to begin seeking information on my thrice-great-grandmother, Gertrude BECHEL Schondel, who died in Defiance in 1885. My previous research on my GROSSELL, SCHONDEL and MOORE origins in Defiance had not indicated that she had ever left Alsace. I've also resumed pursuit of why my great-grandmother, Maria Magdalena GROSSELL Moore (1846-1929), spoke so often and feelingly of Tiffin and Van Wert.
